The dust has settled on Blovember — rather more dust than I would have wished — and it seems natural to look back on a month of solid blogging and see what, if anything, can be learned.
I've no idea if a discussion of the process of blogging is at all interesting, but I guess the entire exercise is inherently self-indulgent (let's face it, blogging is the vanity publishing of the noughties) so let's hope the donkey's back of your patience is strong enough to withstand one more self-possessed straw without breaking.
For me, having to write something every day (or, at least, for every day) was a useful discipline in that it forced me into a mindset where I was actively looking for things to write about.
The downside was that there were some days where I didn't really have anything to write about (I'm sure you spotted which ones those were) and you ended up with random, quite possibly unfunny, stuff that happened to be on my mind at the time.
There were a few occasions where I sat down with very little to inspire me but discovered something along the way; necessity being the mother of invention and all that. The Littlest Hobauer was a good example of this — all I could think to write about was my mild disappointment with 24: Redemption and then The Littlest Hobo thing came along.
The flipside of serendipity is that sometimes I would come across a fairly fertile idea, but couldn't explore it to its full potential because there's just not enough hours in every day. On a more casual blogging schedule I'd spend a few hours on it, but on a daily schedule it was a case of just publish and be damned (about the quality).
Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that I've probably got roughly one entry a week in me that's properly considered and written and has a decent chance of being reasonably amusing.
If I blog every day (or even just several times a week) it's going to be much more variable, but hey, maybe quantity is more important than quality. Perhaps it's just nice to have something new to read in the morning.
So I thought I'd throw it out to the lovely people that read the blog, the people without whom this whole endeavour is futile in the extreme.
